Stowner, a retired governess and a widow who can be severe but who cares quite a bit for Emma and for William. The protagonists of the novel are Emma, a maid for Mrs. She navigates gracefully from place to place and person to person, between interior and exterior moments. The series takes place in 19th century London and Mori has clearly done a lot of research and creates a compelling cityscape. This book is called Emma for a reason, I imagine, with a tip of the hat to Jane Austen. ![]()
